I’ve certainly noticed a rise in the number of ladies looking to travel alone or in small groups, so it’s good to see travel companies responding, by providing tours designed to make us feel safe, comfortable and welcome.

There are alternative ways you can enjoy travelling as a single lady or as part of a larger group. Firstly, I could recommend one of many lovely hotels either for women only or with areas exclusively reserved for them. There is an increasing number across Europe and further afield. I then simply book your flights and convenient airport transfers. Alternatively, I can offer you a cost-effective package tour designed specifically for women. The choice is yours.

Romantic Italy is a popular choice for female travellers and there are some great activity breaks hosted for women by women. These include Italian cooking schools, olive oil tasting, truffle hunting and cheese and wine tasting. There are also tours of Italy’s unrivalled Renaissance arts centres, including Venice and Florence with their breathtaking churches, frescoes and sculptures. But if designer shopping is more your passion, you could head straight to Milan and the legendary Via Montenapoleone, a mecca for haute couture seekers or impoverished window-shoppers!

Looking for something a bit more exotic and adventurous? Let me suggest India. Despite recent
bad press, there are still many companies running exciting but safe trips for solo female travellers. These include cultural tours to wonderful temples and serene yoga retreats in rural ashrams, where you will dine on healthy vegetarian food like you’ve never tasted before, enjoy guided meditations and totally recharge your system.

There are also many more gay- friendly destinations for women to choose from these days, not just the obvious ones like San Francisco, Mykonos and Berlin. Having said that, if you fancy an exciting city break that’s a short flight away, pulsating Berlin is hard to beat for its Bohemian energy. Perhaps surprisingly, the city of Tel Aviv in Israel is known as the gay capital of the Middle East and offers a unique blend of sandy beaches, cool nightlife and culture. June brings Gay Pride Week with its LGBT film and theatre festivals, and one of the world’s most colourful Pride Parades.
