MALMAISON KRIS AND CHARLOTTE HEAD TO CHEZ MAL, TO SEE IF THEIR NEW SEASON MENU LIVES UP TO ITS NAME
Charlotte and I head to the ever impressive Chez Mal at the Malmaison, found on Swinegate, Leeds’s growing glossy business district, to see if their new autumn/winter menu lives up to expectation.
As we take a walk through the bar under the glint of New York style lights, and find the atmosphere transforms to our Chez Mal brasserie style with chandeliers, exposed brickwork, neon and glossy tables. The relaxed yet vibrant feel of Leeds’s restaurant and brasserie is the perfect setting for sampling outstanding menus.
On arrival we were greeted by two very polite and polished waiter and waitress and were seated in the main part of the restaurant. I have always loved Malmaison due to its quirky New York style atmosphere. I find it to always have a very warming feel, the lighting and décor make it the ideal venue for couples, but also for any travellers to the city such as business people of professionals.
Once seated charlotte and I ordered a vintage white wine to accompany our meal. The wines here are always the best and there is always a vast selection to choose from.
We both ordered warm smoked salmon to start, to follow we both ordered the main of British rare breed pork mixed grill. A selection of fresh breads were brought to us with a dipping oil of balsamic and rapeseed oils.
The service so far was spot on, very at tentative but not too much. A good balance. Within no time at all the salmon was brought to us, it was very very succulent and tasted like it had been caught there and then. An elegant taste with an earthy taste of fresh beetroot and a luscious crème fraiche dressing. Our lovely waitress took away our dishes, we were beyond satisfied to say the least. We let this be known as it was that good.
Shortly after our mains came, outstanding. Presentation was up there with that of an oil painting, absolutely jaw dropping. The taste, well that was something else, A combination of pork fillet, pork sausage and my top favourite, pork belly.
The meal was honestly so nice that I ate it at a snail’s pace as I didn’t want it to end. I cannot praise the chef here enough. Quality is everything at Malmaison and it something they have just mastered time and time again.
The food was delightful, and there was an abundance of choice from exquisite fish dishes to tender meat dishes.
The decor is sophisticated, and all the staff are well trained in the menu and very friendly. Our waitress who’s name we did not get was so helpful explaining all the various dishes.
It felt like a fine dining experience without any pretentiousness! Top quality food without the ridiculous price tag and an intimate dining experience where we looked after by a wonderful waitress, only sorry we can’t remember her name!
