City Dweller and socialite, Rachel Flynn heads to Malmaison to try out their mouth-watering American BBQ ribs.
Here at City Dweller we love trying out new menus around Leeds, and luckily for us one of our favourite places to eat and drink, Malmaison, has just launched a mouth-watering American BBQ bargain that’s too good to miss.
With a long overdue catch up on the cards with my good friend Suzie, we had the perfect excuse to try out Malmaison‘s latest offering, and of course sink a cocktail or two!
The Malbar, that occupies the basement of the hotel, is quite the Friday night haunt for my friends and I which I’d put down to a number of reasons; the setting is luxurious yet relaxed, the service is exceptional, and the ‘Thank Mal it’s Friday’ drinks deal of incredible cocktails for a fiver keeps us more than happy. We took full advantage of the bar post meal but on this occasion our night began in the sophisticated, low lit, Brasserie restaurant where we couldn’t wait for our American BBQ Ribs.
To start we ordered from the Brasserie menu, and as I have a bit of a Mussels addiction I just had to order a portion of Moules cooked in Meantime Beer with pancetta, whilst Suzie went for the stunningly presented Ahi Tuna Tartare with chopped avocado, pickled ginger, black sesame, soy dressing and wasabi. Having dined from the Brasserie menu in the past it was hard to resist our starters, however had we of seen the proportion of the Ribs special beforehand we most likely would have saved them for another time!
Onto the main event, and the true reason for our visit, the American BBQ Rib Tips. Usually when there’s a meal deal going some places tend to cut corners on portion size and quality, not in Malmaison’s case, we were each presented with a generous stack of ribs, roasted sweet potatoes, slaw, and to wash it all down a crisp bottle of Sol, all for just £15 per person. Not to harp on too much about price but for the standard, and the amount of food we had, we would have been happy to pay more.
The ribs were definitely the show stoppers of our meal, having been slowly cooked in Mal’s homemade smoke rub marinade the meat literally slid off the bone, and the sweet and tangy BBQ sauce added just the right amount of kick. Served in separate cast iron ramekins the crispy roasted sweet potatoes drizzled in paprika mayo, and the flavoursome chipotle and garlic slaw, were the perfect accompaniments.
If you’re wondering what Malmaison’s take on the recent BBQ food trend stand out from the other restaurants around town well where do I start?! As already mentioned the price is near on unbeatable, not only that but you can enjoy your meal in a fine dining setting with outstanding service, it is the best of both worlds…tasty and hearty comfort food in a classy and intimate environment. And finally, as already mentioned those ribs, the taste, the quality, the texture, it would be quite the challenge to find a superior competitor!
As if we hadn’t eaten enough already our server for the evening Alex tempted us into ordering a special Bourbon Sundae to share for dessert. In true American style the sundae was packed with naughtiness, a gooey chocolate brownie, topped with peanut butter ice-cream, bourbon infused malt cream, bourbon caramel sauce, finished off with a sprinkling of grated Snickers bar, pure genius. I’m not normally a dessert person but on this occasion there was no stopping me.
Feeling sufficiently full, and more than satisfied with our meal, Suzie and I retired to the Malbar where, thanks to the money we saved on our food, we splashed out on a couple of decedent, champagne filled, ‘Bad Boy Good Girl’ cocktails, a fabulous end to a first-rate night.
