We sent our theatre expert Matt Jameson down to the Leeds Grand Theatre in Leeds to review the one and only Mamma Mia!
It has arrived! The musical extravaganza showcasing some of the most loved and iconic songs from Benny and Bjorn themselves, get ready to dance the night away to Abba in the smash hit musical Mamma Mia! Finally, we get to experience this fantastic show in our city of Leeds at the most prestigious venue in town, the Leeds Grand Theatre. Having only seen the film before and totally loving it, I was extremely excited to see this amazing show brought to life on the stage. Not only will there be sequins and glam, but the undeniably superb music and lyrics of Dancing Queen, Super Trooper and of course Mamma Mia!
Sophie Sheridan (Lucy May Barker) is getting married and wants her father to attend her wedding on the tropical Greek Island where she lives with her mother Donna (Helen Hobson). The only problem is there are three potential dads so the only thing to do is invite all three! As the story unfolds you are mesmerized with the beautiful setting and incredible dancing incorporating the classic Abba songs into the narrative of the show. Packed full of hilarious comedy and compromising moments this is the ultimate treat to tantalise and excite, you’ll be up dancing in the isles before you can say Waterloo!
There are some knockout performances from all the cast, a couple to watch out for are Donna’s faithful friends Tanya (Emma Clifford) and Rosie (Gillian Hardie). They both deliver superbly, Emma with her sultry high-class whit in Does Your Mother Know and Gillian’s comedy timing and desperation in Take A Chance On Me. I have to say the entire production is outstanding and shines radiantly as one of the most feel good and entertaining musicals of all time. I wouldn’t miss this for all the tea in china, you will be blown away and taken back to a time when we all sang along, Thank You For The Music!
See you soon!
