Could you explain what your job involves and how you started off at Napoleons Casino?
As General Manager of Napoleons my role involves managing and motivating the Leeds team. We undoubtedly have some of the friendliest staff in Leeds and we all strive to ensure whether the customers win or lose, they always have a great night. As well as the customer facing role of the job, I am also responsible for the profitability of the business, meeting budgets, marketing plans, networking and charity work.
Would you believe I started here at Napoleons 30 years ago after I came back to live in England after 12 years in Australia. Previously I had worked in Knightsbridge, London and when I returned I wanted to buy a house so I thought I would just do this for a year, get a mortgage and then look for something more permanent! I started as an Inspector/Dealer and progressed from there. In 1999 I was made General Manager and the rest I guess you could say is history!
What is the most satisfying part of your job?
Personally, I find the most satisfying part of being a General Manager is helping young people develop and watch them as they progress through the ranks.
An old member of staff called in a couple of years ago to see us before going back to work on the ships, he said that he had bumped into someone who had also worked at Napoleons and they were discussing how I had taught them both Blackjack. It is very satisfying to know that we have helped many young people to have a career, one that can take them abroad and one which will take them to parts of the world some only dream of.
What would be your advice to anyone reading this article wanting to follow in your footsteps or come to work at Napoleons?
The gaming industry offers great career prospects with equal opportunities for all. Firstly you need to train as a dealer and be sure you understand the basics, and then work your way up the ranks from there. If you work hard, have good people skills and show initiative, you can go a long way. It won’t happen overnight so tenacity and dedication are also key. It’s all worth it as if you put in the work you reap the rewards over time. One thing is for sure, there is never a dull day and every day is different so you’ll always be kept on your toes!
What do you do to relax?
In my spare time I enjoy Aqua Aerobics and getting outside and doing the gardening. You can’t beat the fresh Yorkshire air! As a treat, and to really relax, I like to visit Ragdale Hall & Spa with friends – it’s the ultimate way to recharge the batteries.
If you could invite anyone to dine at Napoleons’ restaurant dead or alive who would it be and why?
Without a doubt it would have to be David Attenborough for his knowledge and enthusiasm. I’d also love to hear his take as he ‘documents’ the buzz and excitement that unfolds on the casino floor which is overlooked by the restaurant.
