LEEDS CITY MAGAZINE COLUMNIST AND MODEL ADAM ULAH REVIEWS PARKSIDE TAVERN, A GREAT PLACE FOR FOOD & DRINK

Cool, trendy and inviting Parkside Tavern is a great place to hang out whether you want a few after work drinks a game of pool or soak up the sun on the terrace, it really does have a lot to offer.

Located on Merrion Street just down from the Merrion centre and within walking distance to the various carparks it’s in a convenient location in town.

Me and my mate Andy went down on Tuesday to test our knowledge and try out the new quiz night. When we arrived, we were a bit early so had a few drinks at the bar first before the quiz started at 7.30pm. I couldn’t believe how busy it was especially on a Tuesday night, there was a real buzz about the place so I knew I was in for a good night.

We went to sit down and the host talked everybody through how it worked, we had never been before so wasn’t sure how an interactive quiz worked, so the quiz master came over to our table and talked us through how to set it up on our smart phones and register as a team. We had to pick a team name and a theme song for our team then we were ready to go.

Quizzes have certainly moved on since the last time I did one that’s for sure. The quiz was all done on your phone so you had to be quick at buzzing in, there were multiple choice, pictures, buzzer round, music, general knowledge the lot. With the quiz being interactive it created loads of energy and a great atmosphere with everybody getting involved and peoples competitive streak coming out when trying to be the fastest to buzz in and get the question right, as you got a bonus point for being the quickest. Your theme song is played if you hit the buzzer first. We had a proper laugh, the less said about our score the better though but we were at a slight disadvantage as was only 2 people on our team and we had worked our way through the cocktail menu which won’t have helped either, that’s my excuse anyway ha.

You can book a table for the quiz in advance if you have a large group, you can do this via their website www. parksidetavern.co.uk or on their Facebook page which is parkside tavern. There are also prizes to be won on the night.

There are gaps in between the quiz to go to the bar and get a drink, order food or both so we decided to order some pizzas. I went for the serrano ham and goats cheese and Andy ordered meat feast. The pizzas are cooked in front of you as it’s an open kitchen which I like and they bring them to your table in a takeaway pizza box which I thought was different but a cool idea. The pizzas were bang on really tasty and didn’t take us long to demolish it. There are 7 pizzas to choose from including a vegetarian option, a vegan option and a gluten free option, so caters for everyone. All priced at £9 so a real bargain and worth every penny, so no need to leave early if you’re getting peckish.

Parkside Tavern not only do quiz night every Tuesday but has so much more to offer. They have a DJ on every Friday and Saturday night from 7.30 to close, there are 3 beer terraces, a beer garden, and an outdoor seating area to the front. They have various pool tables and darts as well.

Opening hours are 3pm-11pm Monday to Thursday, Friday 3pm-1am Saturday 12-1am and Sunday 1-11pm but they are Licenced till 4am depending on how busy it is on the night. They offer pool free for an hour on a Sunday per group this can be booked online on their website.

It has a private room upstairs that can be hired for baby showers, engagements, christenings, wedding birthday, anniversaries any occasion really. They also allow under 18s until 5pm so perfect if you want to have a family gathering through the day and have children.

Moving on to the bar. It offers gluten-free beer and vegan drinks. Happy hour is from open till 8pm every day, £3.50, which include house spirit and mixers, medium house wine, pints of Roxy and bottles of Corona or Peroni.

Also, a great cocktail menu and these are available 2 for £12 every day and you can mix and match at all times so you can’t go wrong there especially on these warmer nights.

They have a big screen inside and put on various sporting events throughout the year including grand nationals, rugby, football and the world cup in summer.

The bar offers draught lagers, IPAs, hand pull cast ales, cider on draught, fruit cider, bottled beers, spirits, cocktails, Guinness, wine, soft drinks red bull, fruit juice fizzy drinks the lot so there really is something for everyone, drinkers or none drinkers. They have a small selection of snacks as well crisps, salami, and pork scratchings. The pub has air conditioning for the summer and central heating for those colder nights.

All the staff were pleasant and friendly, the quiz master Mike was funny and got the crowd going and created a real buzz and great atmosphere. Andy the manager has a wonderful team working for him.

We both had a good night proper laugh and would definitely recommend it. I will certainly be going back again for the quiz night but next time I will be taking a group of us to try and improve on our score.
