Pension company Portafina are striving to raise awareness of diabetes and funding to help find better treatments.
Diabetes is a subject that is close tomanaging director Jamie Smith Thompson’s heart, as his daughter has type one diabetes. With first-hand experience at how difficult the condition can be, Mr.Smith Thompson is campaigning to raise awareness and funds, together with JDRF.
JDRF are the world’s leading charitable funder for research into diabetes. They are leading the field in looking for better treatments, and are confident that one day there will be a cure. However, unless there is more funding for research, that cure could be a long time away.
Mr.Smith Thompson and his staff at Portafina are making it their mission to bring about a change, and to make a real difference to the lives of people who have the condition.
Diabetes is a chronic illness that is to do with how the body regulates glucose, and it is thought to affect over four million people in the UK. There are two main types of diabetes. Type one diabetes is the rarer form, typically affecting people froma young age. It is caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin, which is needed by cells to use glucose as fuel. Because glucose is not getting into the cells,it creates a build-up in the body, leading to serious and dangerous health issues. It is estimated that 20,000 children underthe age of fifteen are affected by type one diabetes.
Type two diabetes is caused when the pancreas does produce insulin, but the body does not process it as it should. This also leads to elevated blood sugar levels, thatcan have implications for other processes in the body. This type of diabetes usually begins in adulthood, and can usually be controlled through a healthy lifestyle.
Diabetes diagnosis has doubled during the last twenty years, and more research and better treatments are needed to combat this illness.
Portafina is a growing business that is able to help shine a light on the cause. The staff have set up a number of fund-raising events, and have just completed their Ride to Cure Diabetes 2018 and raised over £1000. However, more needs to be done, and they are asking for your help.
