Recently we welcomed to Radio Aire one of the biggest names around – Olly Murs. Hot off the back of releasing his brand new album he came in to speak to us about the process of putting the record together, the upcoming tour and the new series of The Voice.

His new album ‘You know, I know’ was released late last year after only a short break. His previous album ’24 hrs’ was a lot more sensitive and mellow and he told us it was important for him to come back with something more up-tempo and ‘Olly-esq’. He said “The last album was very emotional – it was very honest and it came from a really hurtful place with an ex so I felt like I needed to get some of that out there – but it was nice to do this new album when I’m not really thinking about anyone, I’m just having fun.”

The first single ‘Moves’ was written by Ed Sheeran and Olly said “Just having Ed think of me with this song is great. We’ve been friends for a while and he’s a lovely guy. He must have every artist in the world looking for a song from him so this was an honour.”

He did however reveal that it’s not the song originally wrote for him. He told us “He sent a song to my label and I never got to hear it before it was taken away. I phoned to ask him what happened and he told me he was going to keep that one for himself. He apologised and an hour later he sent ‘Moves’ over and that was it – I was hooked. It’s cheeky, positive and happy and that just fits for me.”

Later this year Olly heads out on the ‘You know, I know’ UK arena tour. He said “I can’t wait to sing Moves live – it’s a banger. I love getting on the road again and playing some of these new song.”

He also told us it was easier to put together the set list for the tour this time around. “Sometimes fans wants a specific song from an album because it means something to them but really when people come and see me live they expect to hear all the biggest hits. This time because the album I’m promoting is sort of like a biggest hits, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing – all the songs people know.”

Olly will be at The First Direct Arena in Leeds on Thursday 23rdMay with support from Rak-Su.
