MATT JAMESON LEEDS CITY MAGAZINE COLUMNIST, CHAMPION FUND RAISER, FOODIE AND THESPIAN CHECKS OUT THE NEW CONSERVATORY WEEKEND BREAKFAST MENU
Early morning rises on a weekend are now very much part of the everyday in the heart of the metropolis that is Leeds city centre. I for one love to be up and out enjoying the fresh air and fuelling up for the day ahead, and now summer is just around the corner the sun is shining bright too! With so many different eating establishments in the city it was a treat to be invited to The New Conservatory for a Saturday morning breakfast to begin an action-packed weekend ahead. Life can be so busy and full of stress it always important to take the time to relax and enjoy the company of good friends in fabulous surroundings. The New Conservatory has just that feel with an easy and comfortable atmosphere, inviting you in to chill and enjoy great food. They have a long and distinguished history as one of Leeds’s oldest and abiding favourite bars. Now open Saturday and Sunday from 10amuntil late you’ll find them right in the heart of Leeds city centre on Albion Street, opposite Toni and Guy, just a stone’s throw for the Trinity Shopping Centre.
Arriving just after 10am myself and a very good friend of mine walked down the entrance stairs into the warm and inviting bar area to await being seated. We were greeted with a massive smile from the lovely waitress who welcomed us into The New Conservatory then showed us to a quiet table to sit and peruse the new breakfast menu. With an extensive choice including smoked ham and cheddar omelette, eggs benedict, the vegetarian full English, and not to mention the wide selection of teas, coffees and fresh fruit juices. When it comes to food, especially breakfast I’m always desperate to try something new, but this time the classic caught my eye and The New Conservatory English breakfast was just what I needed to start the day.
Being a chocoholic and not a tea of coffee drinker I ordered the hot chocolate to begin, with my pal having a coffee and in her words ‘a great way to start the day and just the right amount’. When the drinks arrived, I was blown away with the enormity of marshmallows and cream which I love and to me this was the perfect way to start the day! Rich, creamy and hot… what more can you want? Followed with a refreshing orange juice my thirst and taste buds and been well and truly turned on.
After having a quick catch up together and talking about the latest antics of another friend of ours, the main event arrived and looked absolutely gorgeous. My mouth was watering with the delicious smells and we both couldn’t wait to tuck in! Two fried eggs to perfection, bacon cooked just enough so the flavour melted in your mouth, juicy fired tomatoes bursting with ripeness and succulent mushrooms. I have to say that the Cumberland sausage was totally amazing and by far the best I’ve had in a long time… and my pal would concur on this too. The food was cooked to perfection and presented in the best way possible to tantalise and excite the eating experience before you, a breakfast for the gods to energise and stimulate the day ahead. With just the right amount too so not to slow you down. Top marks to the chef and I’ll most certainly be back for seconds.
The New Conservatory has a classy and easy vibe about the place with attentive and friendly staff making your visit an enjoyable and special experience. The food is on point and with a wide selection to cater for all tastes, there will definitely be something you’ll enjoy and please do try the sausage!
