SL8 (pronounced Slate) is the latest creation by Yorkshire business women, Sarah McDermott and Christine Mrozek. The concept of SL8 first came to light a couple of years back, and after much planning and the usual shedding of blood, sweat and tears that comes with building any new business, their brainchild SL8 finally emerged onto the market in March 2016.
It was important to the creators that the brand could be used as a platform to raise both funds and awareness to help safeguard the environment for our future generations, and so SL8 have partnered with Cool Earth, the charity that works alongside indigenous tribes within the rainforests to halt deforestation, and give them a sustainable living. SL8 now donates 10% of all profits directly to Cool Earth.
The fabrics sourced by SL8 are Fairtrade, ethically produced premium cottons or cotton blends with an emphasis on luxury. Each garment also carries a tongue-in-cheek slogan, penned with a certain irony that is unique to the SL8 brand. Each piece is hand finished and individually silk screen printed by craftsmen and women in the UK, detail like this is rarely seen in this age of mass production, and it’s something that SL8 are very proud of and have no intention of changing no matter how large the company grows.
Refreshingly, despite the detailed and expensive manufacturing process involved in producing an ‘ethical’ garment, their products do not cost the earth, with their T’s and tanks being only £22. Add this to the free worldwide delivery that they offer, and the donation to Cool Earth and you’ll realise that SL8 are in it to make a difference and bring something good to the masses, rather than to over furnish their own pockets.
SL8’s current range includes fabulous festival style cropped T’s in a gorgeous speckled cotton that just feels divine, along with Uber cool street style cropped hoodies, rapper caps and the perfect rock chick raw edge tank.
Currently only stocking a capsule womenswear collection, SL8 have many more exciting pieces in development, including a full Streetwear denims collection, menswear and bags and accessories, all due to hit the stores later this year. So keep your eyes peeled folks, this is certainly one to watch. Could SL8 be the next mega brand? And with eco credentials too!
