Last August Nuffield Health took ownership of the gym along with 34 others across the country from Virgin Active and since then a significant investment programme has taken place. The facilities have been rebranded and enhanced but it’s their new physiotherapy services and their health MOTs that really stand out.
Exclusively for new and existing gym members, health MOTs highlight areas of health and wellbeing that need improvement and then encourages ways to make changes. The hour health check measures blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar level, BMI, resting heart rate, waist to hip ratio and aerobic fitness. Members will be able to have up to four free health MOTs a year!
When I went down to Nuffield to try this out, it’s not surprising I was a little anxious! While most of us do think we’re fit and healthy, it’s always a bit worrying when you’re put under the microscope. Mine was taken by one of the personal trainers there, Chantelle Kirkham, who was fantastic in explaining the process and making it clear that it was nothing to worry about and mainly to see if there’s anything that could need addressing.
After doing the Health MOT, which couldn’t have been an easier experience, finding out that I’m basically a healthy lad made the Health MOT worth doing! But it was the advice that was given to encourage changes that really helped, whether it was looking at how much exercise you’re currently doing, whether you need to look into your diet or just a quick reminder of the recommended alcohol intake for adults.
Speaking to Leeds City Magazine about the new Health MOTs, Helen Walker, General Manager of the Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Leeds Club, said: “We are really excited to be able to offer these unique health and wellbeing services and we are looking forward to helping Leeds residents get fit and healthy and then stay fit and healthy.”
