Leeds City Magazine Meet Clint Gordon

Can you tell us about you and your background?

After setting up my first venture at the age of 19 I quickly gained a passion to succeed in business. I spent as much time as I could absorbing information from like minded individuals and making more investments in property and business until the opportunity eventually opened and I came to set up Rum & Reason, Bar and Caribbean Restaurant.

What does your business role entail?

I am always looking for opportunities to expand my business portfolio while focusing on developing and improving our existing business brands and service. I think like any business owner who is passionate about their business I find myself doing as much as possible to push the business forward. I would literally be behind the bar at Rum & Reason serving drinks and being the waiter who brings your food out if I could!

Why did you choose Leeds to open your business?

With Leeds being my home city it was the obvious choice but also when I researched and found Leeds did not have any independent city centre Caribbean Bar and Restaurants, so it seemed a perfect fit.

Is there one specific thing that makes you proud of your Bar and Caribbean Restaurant Rum & Reason?

I feel lucky that I have had the opportunity to create a unique venue that specialising in authentic Caribbean food cooked by our amazing Jamaican chefs as well as serving Caribbean drinks and playing some of the best urban music genres. It really is a showcase for Caribbean culture and I’m really proud that Leeds now has that and I have been able to play a key part in it.

Do you have a favourite dish at your Restaurant and what drink would you recommend with it?

It’s a tough one as there really are so many good dishes but the Jerk Salmon and Rum Punch probably just takes it, although the Jerk chicken and Curry Goat are a close second and third.

If you could invite 4 people dead or alive to Rum & Reason who would it be and why?

It’s got to be Kevin Hart for the comedy, Bob Marley because I love reggae, Michael Jackson for the dance moves and maybe Usain Bolt to come and sample some authentic Jamaican food!

What makes you happy?

Food and Rum! You can probably see why I have loved setting up Rum & Reason!

If anyone is reading this and would like to follow in your footsteps what advice would you give?

I speak to so many people who aspire to be entrepreneurs and I always say the same… what are you waiting for? Be fearless, believe in yourself and your ideas, and work as hard as you can to make it happen.

What do you do to relax?

I’m quite an active person so I don’t really end up spending that much time relaxing. I usually end up in the gym or going for a run whenever I plan to relax.

Conveniently located in the popular Arena Quarter opposite the Leeds Grand Theatre and close to Leeds Arena it’s the perfect place for a drink and a bite to eat before an event or gig. A warm and friendly atmosphere ideal for top days or nights out.
